Many boaters have been surprised to wait at a bridge that did not open. The reason is simple: the operating staff used to take breaks twice daily, between 12:00 and 13:00 and 16:15 and 17:15.

Fortunately, this has largely changed. Most bridges and locks in Friesland are now operated continuously, even on Sundays and public holidays. This was made possible after extensive consultation between the province, municipalities, and boating companies. Municipalities not yet participating expect to join soon. The bridge and lock operators welcome the new schedule.

Regular operating times for bridges and locks

If you are boating through Friesland’s canals, you will inevitably encounter bridges and locks. In general, these are happy to operate for leisure boaters.

Period April 1 – November 1: 09:00 – 19:00
June – August: 09:00 – 20:00
Some bridges still have short lunch breaks:
09:00 – 12:00 | 13:00 – 16:15 | 17:15 – 19:00

General rules for passing bridges and locks

  • Join the queue behind other waiting boats when approaching a bridge or lock.
  • Proceed quickly once the bridge opens.
  • At busy bridges, lower your mast if possible.
  • Always follow the instructions of the operating staff.
  • During heavy road traffic, water traffic may be held before the bridge or lock opens.

By following these rules, you ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience in Friesland.
