A spring boating holiday in Friesland offers unique advantages: quiet waterways, lower prices, blooming nature and flexible booking options. The period from early April to June combines pleasant boating weather with much less crowding than the high season. With the right clothing and preparation, spring is often an ideal time for a boating holiday.

Many people automatically think of July and August when planning a boating holiday. Yet by doing so, they miss out on a special period: spring. After 20 years of welcoming guests at Yachtcharter Wetterwille, we see a clear trend. More and more experienced boaters deliberately choose April, May or early June.

In this guide, I will take you through everything you need to know about spring boating in Friesland. What can you expect in terms of weather? What clothing should you bring? Which routes are most beautiful during this period?

Why spring is an ideal time to go boating

Spring scores higher than the high season on five key points.

Peace and quiet on the water

In April and May, the water is calm and serene. Traffic is around 50 to 60 percent lower than in the summer months. That means no queues at locks, no crowded moorings and, above all, no rushed atmosphere. For beginner skippers, this is invaluable. Alexander, who has 20 years of experience in boat rental, says: “In spring you simply learn the craft better. You have the space to make mistakes without stress.”

Better availability

In the high season, popular weeks are often fully booked months in advance. In spring, that pressure is not there. You can often reserve a boat just two to three weeks in advance. In addition, weekend bookings or midweek trips are possible. Ideal if you cannot take an entire week off.

Price advantage

Boating in spring is cheaper than in July or August. April and early May fall into the C and D seasons. The difference compared to the high season can be as much as 20 to 25 percent. For a family, that can easily mean several hundred euros to spend on enjoyable things along the way.

Nature at its best

April and May are the months when Friesland awakens. Willows get their first light-green leaves, fruit trees blossom and young animals appear everywhere. In nature reserves such as De Alde Feanen, spring may well be the highlight of the year. Bird migration is in full swing and the silence is broken only by natural sounds.

What to expect: weather and boating conditions

The big question: what is the weather actually like in spring? The honest answer: changeable, but often surprisingly good.

April is an unpredictable month. You can have days of 14 degrees with plenty of sunshine, but also cool mornings of 8 degrees. The biggest challenge is the wind, which can sometimes pick up strongly on the open lakes.

May is usually the turning point. Temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees are normal. Nature is in full bloom and the weather becomes more stable. May often brings longer periods of fine weather, interspersed with an occasional rain shower.

June already feels almost like summer. With temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees, it is a pleasure to be on the water. We still count the first half of June as part of the pre-season.

Water temperature and swimming

Let’s be honest: the water is still cold in April and May. Water temperatures range between 10 and 16 degrees. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Many villages along the boating routes have a swimming pool. From mid-June onwards, swimming in the lakes becomes more realistic.

Daylight and cruising times

A major advantage: the days lengthen quickly. In April you already have more than 14 hours of daylight, increasing to 16 hours in May. That means long cruising days without rushing. Those long evenings are magical. The light takes on a warm glow and you can talk endlessly about the day while the sun slowly sets.

Bridges and locks

The boating season officially starts on 1 April. From that moment on, most bridges are staffed again. In spring, bridge keepers are often more relaxed than in the busy high season. They have time for a chat and offer tips about the route.

What should you bring on a spring boating trip?

Good preparation starts with the right luggage. For spring, the rule is: think in layers and bring slightly more than you think you will need.

Layered clothing

Wear several layers in the morning that you can remove during the day. A T-shirt as a base layer, a fleece jumper on top and a windproof or waterproof jacket over that works perfectly. A good jacket is worth its weight in gold. It does not have to rain; a protective layer against the wind makes the difference between cold and comfortable.

Petra’s tip after years of experience: “Bring one warm outfit more than you think you will need. Better an extra jumper in the wardrobe than regret on a cool evening.”

Spring-specific items

  • Sunscreen: Water reflects sunlight. Apply generously.
  • Sunglasses: The flickering of water can be tiring for your eyes.
  • Blankets: Perfect for sitting outside when it cools down slightly.
  • Hot drinks: A thermos with tea or coffee is wonderful during a morning cruise.
  • Extra clothing for children: Children love to play near the water.
  • Waterproof shoes: Decks can be slippery after rain.

Which boating routes are most beautiful in spring?

Some routes truly shine in spring.

  1. Frisian Lakes Route

This classic route is perfect for spring boaters. Suitable for beginners, lots of variety and easily accessible moorings. The trees along the banks are in bloom and you can leisurely get to know Sneek, Sloten, Workum and IJlst. In three days you can complete a lovely circuit, but you can extend it to seven days. For novice skippers, this is the ideal introduction to Frisian waters.

  1. De Alde Feanen

For nature lovers, this area is an absolute must in spring. Bird migration is in full swing. Herons are nesting, black-tailed godwits are calling and, if you are lucky, you might spot a marsh harrier or even the white-tailed eagle. This area calls for a different way of boating: no rush, no schedule. Perfect for families with young children, nature photographers and anyone seeking tranquillity.

  1. Lits–Lauwersmeer Route

For the more experienced boater, the route to the Lauwersmeer is a wonderful spring option. The Lauwersmeer is a bird paradise. In spring you will see huge groups of geese, ducks and waders. The route takes five to seven days. Do note: in strong winds the Lauwersmeer can be rough, but on beautiful spring days it is magnificent.

Special spring events

King’s Day on 27 April is a lively event in harbour towns. Orange decorations, flea markets and conviviality everywhere. In May, local fairs and spring markets regularly take place in various villages. Check event calendars in advance and plan your route accordingly.

Advantages and points to consider at a glance

Advantages of spring boating

  • Peace and space: You have the waters almost to yourself
  • Nature: Blossom, young animals, bird migration
  • Flexible bookings: Weekend, midweek, last-minute possible
  • More affordable: 20–25% difference compared to high season
  • Authenticity: Meet local people, not just tourists

Points to consider

The weather is more changeable. This is not a disadvantage if you adapt to it, but flexibility in your planning helps. Swimming directly from the boat is limited due to cold water temperatures. Some facilities may have limited opening hours in the early pre-season.

Is spring boating right for you?

You are an ideal spring boater if you enjoy peace and nature, value authenticity over guaranteed swimming weather, and are flexible enough to adapt your plans to the weather. For beginner skippers, spring may well be the very best time to start.

Tips from Yachtcharter Wetterwille

After 20 years of welcoming guests, we see clear patterns among spring boaters. Many returning guests deliberately choose May because they have come to appreciate the tranquillity of the pre-season. Some even prefer the pre-season to July or August.

A frequently heard tip from experienced guests: bring one warm outfit more than you think you will need. The evenings can be cooler than expected, and an extra jumper prevents disappointment.

Flexibility is worth its weight in gold during a spring boating trip. Do not plan every day to the minute, but leave room for adjustments. In beautiful weather you can stay on the water longer. In rain, you can explore a cosy town instead.

Check the weather forecast shortly beforehand. Spring weather forecasts more than three days ahead are often unreliable. Make concrete plans preferably one or two days in advance.

Ready for a spring boating trip?

Spring combines tranquillity, nature and value with pleasant boating weather. With the right preparation, a wonderful cruising experience awaits you. The period from April to June shows Friesland from a side that summer boaters miss.

Check the occupancy overview for availability in the pre-season, or get in touch if you have questions about specific routes or boat types. Because sometimes the best time to do something is not when everyone else does it, but just before.
