Many boaters feel a bit of tension when passing through locks. However, there is no need to be afraid as long as you approach the lock with respect and follow the instructions. Especially in Friesland, navigating locks is straightforward and manageable – even for beginners.

Few Locks in Friesland

Friesland itself has relatively few locks. On many boating routes, particularly in the Frisian Lakes region, you will sail almost without any height differences. Locks are only encountered when transitioning from Friesland’s inland waters to the IJsselmeer.Under normal water levels, the height differences are usually minimal. An exception is the Frisian Lock in Lemmer, a so-called shaft lock leading to the Noordoostpolder. Here, the height difference can be several meters, but even this lock is well-organized and presents little difficulty in practice – even for beginners.

Assistance and Support at Locks

Boaters heading from Friesland towards the border lakes will encounter larger locks, such as the Roggebots Lock near Dronten. Stewards are often on hand to assist, taking lines and working together with the lock keeper to ensure a safe and smooth passage.

This service is also offered during the high season at other locks in North and South Holland, on the Maas River, and in the province of Zeeland. This makes lock navigation in the Netherlands accessible and comfortable for all boaters.

With proper preparation and a calm approach, navigating locks in Friesland is a valuable experience that contributes to a relaxed and enjoyable boating holiday.
